Change Your Passphrase

Prerequisites
You’ve already installed FlowCrypt and created a new private key or imported the existing private key you had used previously.
See the Forgotten Passphrases guide, if you don’t remember your private key passphrase.

If you want to change your passphrase you need to open the FlowCrypt Settings of your account.

1. In your account settings enter the Security section:

2. On the Security page, choose the Change Passphrase option:

If you’ve chosen the Require a passphrase to open encrypted email option earlier, you’ll be required to confirm your previous passphrase before changing it. There is no way around this requirement unless you also have FlowCrypt set up on another device where this option wasn’t selected.

3. Now, enter your new passphrase:

Note your passphrase down for later recovery. If you lose it, unfortunately, your past encrypted emails will be lost forever.

Changing the passphrase only affects the device that you’re currently using. The passphrase that you use on other devices with FlowCrypt set up will remain the same.

4. After you’ve changed your passphrase, you’ll be prompted to back up your updated private key. This step is very important so that you can use your updated passphrase next time you set up FlowCrypt on another device due to some reason (for instance, if you lose your device or it stops working).

Click the green Back up as email button to finish.

Enterprise customers can customize or disable these backup options in favor of their own key management.
